Jimenez co-sponsoring bill to stop automatic legislator pay raises

State Representative Sara Wojcicki Jimenez (R-Springfield) is co-sponsoring a bill that would cancel an automatic cost of living raise for state legislators that is set to go into effect on July 1. Illinois law states that the raise is automatic if the House and Senate do not enact legislation to stop it.

“With no budget, growing debt and service providers not getting paid the last thing we should be doing is giving a raise to legislators,” Jimenez said. “This is just common sense.”

Without action to cancel the increase, every member of the Illinois House and Illinois Senate would be in line for more than $1000 in raises next fiscal year.

The bill is House Bill 4441. As of Friday afternoon it had more than two dozen bi-partisan co-sponsors.
